– I lied, he said.
Not for me. It wasn’t.
The truth had no upside.
So that the weight would be lifted?
How is that fair?
One person suffering or two?
Easy math.

– I knew, she replied.
You’re not that cagey.
I appreciate the intention. I do.
But, who are you to make the decisions?
To ration out the information like crumbs to a bird?
Doing the right thing,
doesn’t always mean playing the hero.

– I didn’t want you to hurt any more.

– I needed the truth.

– I’m sorry.

– I know.

– I didn’t mean —

– Would you do it differently next time?

– No…

– I know.
